New dentures like real teeth are expected to replace porcelain teeth

Science and Technology Daily (Reporter Hao Xiaoming) The reporter learned from the Institute of Metal Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that Researcher Liu Zengqian and Researcher Zhang Zhefeng of the Material Fatigue and Fracture Laboratory of the Institute cooperated with relevant personnel of the University of California, Berkeley and Jilin University to form a composite Structural biomimetic design, combining clinically-applied zirconia ceramics with biocompatible resins. By mimicking the microstructure of natural shell pearl layer, a rigid, strength and modulus are designed and developed to perfectly match the human normal teeth. The new type of zirconia-resin bionic composite denture material is expected to replace the widely used zirconia all-ceramic denture.

The new denture material has a microstructure similar to that of natural shells on the microscopic scale. Zirconia is arranged in parallel in the form of sheets or tightly stacked in the form of "brick wall". The gaps between them are filled with resin. The new denture material retains the excellent biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and aesthetic effects of zirconia ceramics, and has a certain plastic deformation ability and unique dynamic energy consumption characteristics, that is, the denture can consume external force through viscoelastic deformation when under stress The applied energy protects the gums and sharpens the teeth.

The hardness and modulus of traditional zirconia ceramic dentures are much higher than those of human teeth. When people install such dentures, they will significantly accelerate the wear on the jaws and the normal teeth in contact with both sides. In the experiments of the new denture material and tooth grinding, the material has a lower coefficient of friction than zirconia ceramics, which can significantly reduce the wear of the denture on normal human teeth. In particular, the fracture toughness of the new denture material is higher than that of all denture materials reported so far. Its bionic structure can effectively prevent crack propagation by promoting crack deflection and preventing crack opening.

In addition, new denture materials are easier to machine than zirconia all-ceramic teeth, especially using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD / CAM) methods can be produced on-site for patients in the hospital, changing the existing zirconia all-ceramics. Dentures can only be processed and produced in a "private custom" manner, thereby realizing batch supply, significantly reducing the cost of preparing and processing the dentures and shortening the waiting time for patients.

Liu Zengqian pointed out that the new bionic composite denture material is expected to replace the widely used zirconia all-ceramic dentures, which can significantly improve the use of the denture and extend its service life, and has considerable application prospects and market potential.

At present, the research team is conducting further research on the fatigue performance, coloring, and biocompatibility of new denture materials under simulated cyclic occlusal conditions, and cooperate with hospitals to explore clinical applications.
